Point Gourde

Point Gourde

Projected just off the Chaguaramas peninsula lies a limestone headland known as Point Gourde. It is the mysterious bush further south of the Western Main Road oft ignored by unaware party goers of the Anchorage facility. However there is a trail that leads to a spectacular forest that is reclaiming the area that was once a limestone quarry.

An interesting facet of this the forest is that it contains dry xerophytic vegetation that is rare on the mainland but very common on the Bocus Islands. It is now an undisturbed niche where creatures such as the venusta metalmark butterfly, the elvira chionura hummingbird the streaked saltator and the tufted capuchin monkey can flourish.

Those gifted with the knowledge of the headland often frequent the area to engage in bird watching, photography and rock climbing. The next time you take a trip down the Western Main Road, Chaguaramas in the vicinity of Pier 1 be sure to take this secret with you and explore Point Gourde.
