Five Islands Water & Amusement Park !

Five Islands Water & Amusement Park !

Chaguaramas' newest recreational installment hit the ground running earlier this year, boasting "The largest of its kind in the South Caribbean". It is both an indoor and outdoor facility with loads of activities, some of which are new to Trinidad and Tobago.

There are numerous water slides and pools and a special kids' zone splash pools for suited for young children. Also featured is a "lazy river" that allows you to gingerly float around the park

The "Caiman Carts Grand Prix" ! - The facility offers a go kart track designed for a combination of skill and thrill with its winding track, hair pin bends, waterfall tunnel and straightaways ! All drivers must possess a driving licence though !

The Shark Attack Surf Rider ! - The first surf wave simulator in Trinidad that allows you to surf or body board weather you're just beginning or a seasoned expert, if you wipe out, you can have peace of mind knowing you're in a controlled environment.

Relive the glory days when video game arcades ruled the teenage entertainment era, or bring your children to experience a bit of modern history. The arcade has an abundance of games, both classic and new with the ambiance of the "days of yore"

Ocean Glide Ice Skating Rink - Yes you saw right, an ice skating rink on the coastline in the Caribbean ! Both beginners and experienced skaters are welcomed as aid equipment is available for first timers.

Dragon Fly Air Racer - A swivel ride that assimilates fighter jet maneuvers. Buckle in tight and get ready to have some fun ! I won't recommend however for those of us gifted with motion sickness.

Pelican Fly Trampoline Jump Zone - What can I say ? 2500 square feet of trampoline space ? What can be more amazing ?

Howler Trail Ropes Course - Boasting the first indoor ropes course in Trinidad you can climb through the Chaguaramas forest above the arcade. Take this opportunity to measure your fitness as you swing, grab and climb your way through the course.

Wahoo Beach Bar (Coming Attraction) Soon to be commissioned, would be a fully stocked cocktail bar that overlooks the surf simulator and skating rink. Some would argue that amusement wouldn't be the same without a drink in hand, what say ye ?

UpickTT !

UpickTT

Fresh Tomatoes at UpickTT

Although farmers' markets are not a new concept around the world it is a relatively new market to Trinidad and Tobago. Another splendid wonder just off the Tucker Valley Road Chaguaramas; UpickTT allows consumers to walk through the the fields and greenhouses to pick their fruit and vegetables directly off the tree.

It's a culture that is quickly taking hold in the country as a healthier and more informative method of shopping due to the increasing social campaigns highlighting some unscrupulous paractices between farmer and green grocers.

It's a great family activity and quite a satisfying experience, if you've never been to a market such as this before, I implore you to at least once give it a try !

Point Gourde

Point Gourde

Projected just off the Chaguaramas peninsula lies a limestone headland known as Point Gourde. It is the mysterious bush further south of the Western Main Road oft ignored by unaware party goers of the Anchorage facility. However there is a trail that leads to a spectacular forest that is reclaiming the area that was once a limestone quarry.

An interesting facet of this the forest is that it contains dry xerophytic vegetation that is rare on the mainland but very common on the Bocus Islands. It is now an undisturbed niche where creatures such as the venusta metalmark butterfly, the elvira chionura hummingbird the streaked saltator and the tufted capuchin monkey can flourish.

Those gifted with the knowledge of the headland often frequent the area to engage in bird watching, photography and rock climbing. The next time you take a trip down the Western Main Road, Chaguaramas in the vicinity of Pier 1 be sure to take this secret with you and explore Point Gourde.

The Ruins of Chacachacare

The Ruins of Chacachacare

The island of Chacachacare has a very intriguing story to tell, in the late 19th century the St. Catherine church along with a presbytery a school and a hospital was was built on the island to treat with leprosy and mentally ill patients that were formally given care on the mainland of Trinidad.

Abandoned Lepers Quarters

Being the furthest point from Trinidad and a mere 7 miles from Venezuela, the island was considered remote outpost; consequently it was outfitted with its own power generator plant, lighthouse and jail - essentially Chacachacare was relatively self sustained and governed by the St. Dominic nunnery.

Derelict Power Generation Station

There are further eerie and lamentable stories of  Chacachacare however, one recorded case was that of a nun, Sr Rose de Sainte Marie Vebert who succumbed to the same ailment she was there to treat; leprosy. A diary entry on on June 17th 1937 read:

"The sisters kept singing hymns and canticles by her bedside to help her regain her calm when terrible fits shook her poor body. Finally she breathed her last, gently. The sisters transported her body to the chapel. While she lay there exposed, something extraordinary happened: all traces of the awful disease disappeared from her face, and it was looking most beautiful …"

To date there are tales of ghost sightings of nuns and infected patients; these tales however do not seem to deter tourists and campers and it should not deter you either as the eerie rustles at night are almost almost attributed to squirrels and iguanas and other nocturnal creates foraging.

It is definitely worth the half hour boat ride from Chaguaramas if you wish to experience what remains of Chacachacare as the CDA has not officially launched any initiatives to preserve the infrastructure

Chaguaramas Golf Course

Chaguaramas Golf Course

Formerly known as the Tonka Bean plantation, the Chaguaramas Golf Course is yet another point of interest along the Tucker Valley Road. Trees over a century old planted during the Macqueripe estate tonka era are still very much present on the course which supplements its tropical beauty; particularly when in bloom during the July to August months.

It is the only public golf course in Trinidad and Tobago spanning 39 hectares that was built by American servicemen during the US occupation in Chaguaramas during the second world war. The course features 9 holes and 18T Boxes, the only 250ft driving range in Trinidad and Tobago and the following luxuries /amenities such as a Lounge area and Bar and changing rooms.

In comparison to the other clubs in Trinidad and Tobago the Chaguaramas Golf Course fees are quite reasonable despite its meticulous maintenance and curation. It is also equipped with a unique drainage system that allows play even shortly after a heavy downpour.

Macqueripe Bay

Macqueripe Bay

Macqueripe Bay

Located at the top of the Chaguaramas Tucker Valley Road lies one of the most picturesque beaches in Trinidad - Macqueripe Bay named by the Kalina Tribe (Also known as the Caribs) who inhabited the area at the time of Columbus' arrival.

There is a walkway that descends from the top of the Valley Road to the beach which eventually greets you with a spectacular view of the bay, you can see as far as Venezuela on a clear day in the distance. The walkway passes through a well manicured garden that compliments the scenic trek.

Walkway to Macqueripe Bay

Macqueripe is a small bay spanning approximately 120 metres and 20 metres of beach front, however the waters are usually calm crystal clear. A word of caution though, after wading 5 metres in, there is a dredge that gives way deep waters; this feature makes Macqueripe a popular location for scuba and free divers and generally those who wish to enjoy a great swim in the tranquil waters.
